[Ingredient Spotlight] – The Humble Strawberry

This is the second in the “Ingredient Spotlight” series, and this time it’s the strawberry being highlighted! This is the monthly series where I’ll walk through what certain ingredients do, and which products you can buy for your skincare routine!

The first in the series was “Green Tea and Tea Tree Oil”, which you can read here Ingredient Spotlight #1.

I have chosen strawberries the Fragaria, aka Fragaria × ananassa, aka the berry that is not a berry!
I will preface this topic with a disclaimer, the strawberry is not a miracle worker for the skin. It’s not an ingredient which will make a noticeable difference to the skin.

So why did I choose to spotlight it? Well for me my skincare routine is more than just improving my skin, it’s something which I enjoy doing. And part of that enjoyment comes from having fun with the products, and how happy they make me feel. The strawberry is one of my favourite fruits, and I love the scent. So the strawberry products in my routine are ones which make me smile when I use them! But they do have some benefit, so read on to find out what they are and where you can get your strawberry fix from!

Strawberry Benefits

So what benefits do they have?

Well strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid, an anti-oxidant, rich in Vitamin C and an anti-inflammatory. An impressive list of benefits. Strawberries contain an anti-oxidant called ellagic acid, which helps to prevent collagen breakdown and acts as an anti-inflammatory. On the internet you’ll find many home-remedy websites using strawberries for treating acne, as an exfoliator and even as a compress for rashes. However I found very little scientific backing for these claims, other than the fact that strawberries do contain anti-oxidants and Vitamin C. That’s something to keep in mind when using a product with strawberries as the main star ingredient.

There have been studies into the photoprotective potential of strawberries. Studies have shown that strawberries do contain compounds that give photo-protective activity in cells and may protect the skin against UVA. The key word being “may”, I am in no way suggesting that strawberries replace suncream. Think of it as an extra thin layer of protection, but not safe to use solely.

Skincare Products to Buy

So what products can you get which are strawberry centered?

Skinfood Black Sugar Strawbery Mask

One of my favourites is the Skinfood Black Sugar Strawberry Scrub. This is a physical exfoliator which uses sugar as it’s exfoliator base and smells like strawberry jam. I find this mask more gentle than the popular Black Sugar mask, and it’s got a smoother texture.  It contains strawberry seed oil, but given you wash this off after 5-10 minutes I’m not sure this should be the key reason you buy the mask. I think of it as an added extra. I find my skin is softer and feels cleaner after using!

Baviphat Strawberry Toxifying Clay Mask

The other strawberry mask I like is the baviphat strawberry toxifying clay mask. I’ve done a full review of it here on my blog. This product smells more like strawberry yoghurt and helps minimise pore appearance. I’ve found it keeps my skin soft and reduces the appearance of oil, and I like to use it once a week.

Strawberry Sponge Hair Curlers

The third fun strawberry themed product are these hair rollers! While they don’t strictly use strawberry as a key ingredient, I had fun curling these into my hair. I found though that the 6 I have weren’t enough for my thick hair. 8-12, so 2-3 packs would be more ideal.

Forgive the bare face! Did this straight after the shower.
